OVERVIEW

Introduction to
DType HLTS

DType HLTS is a high-legibility typesetting system designed to act upon textual accessibility not at the glyphic level alone, but along the entire perceptual-cognitive chain that governs the act of reading. It is not to be understood as a typeface in isolation, but rather as an accessible composition environment: an editorial apparatus capable of coherently governing the visual, spatial and semantic parameters that jointly determine legibility.

DType HLTS was developed by the Biblioteca di Sardegna under the direction of its Director, Corrado Piana, a specialist in computational linguistics, and was funded by Editoriale Documenta, which holds the international rights to it.

The DType HLTS system was created in accordance with recognised international standards and is distinguished by a morphologically accessible typeface, a semantically grounded page-layout protocol, and a printing protocol conceived to afford the optimal reading experience to individuals affected by presbyopia.

The quality standards characterising the DType HLTS system have been validated by independent professional associations, including through the use of optical magnification devices.

The system has been adopted for the publication of volumes under licence from Einaudi, Feltrinelli, Garzanti, San Paolo, the Libreria Editrice Vaticana and the Italian Episcopal Conference, as well as for the production of printed matter for corporate cultural institutions such as the Museo Barilla, the Fondazione Benetton, the Centro Storico Fiat, the Museo Lavazza, the Archivio Olivetti, the Museo Piaggio and the Fondazione Pirelli.
